Mu Cang Chai Yen Bai


Mu Cang Chai Yen Bai is a mountainous district of Yen Bai province, about some 300 km north of Ha Noi, in the northeastern region of Vietnam. The place is home to the H’Mong and Thai community. It is famous for terraced field which were ranked as National famous landscape. Due to that, from September to October, the fanciful scenery of terraced fields during the harvest season attracts many photographers to this area.

With the height of 1000 meters above sea level, local residences grow their own rice on the terraced fields, for the purpose of preventing water from flowing downhill. This area’s rice cultivation is very different from the deltas of Mekong and Hong rivers, as

there is only one harvest season and the rice productivity here is not as high as in the deltas

Mu Cang Chai’s beauty is not only shown by the miraculous scenery, but also the human presence here. The vision of the ethnic people harvesting the ripe, full-yellow rice seedling is like a mixture of colors, brightening up the corner of the Northwest sky. The pattern on the colorful costumes of the ethnic people here is drawn by beeswax mixed with color.

These terraced fields lying among rugged green mountain valleys, under clear blue sky create pectacular scenery. When being seen from afar, the terraced rice fields look like a picture of nature with heart- catching beauty keeping tourists to stay for admiration for a while. This picture however has its color changed seasonally, exhibiting its most alluring charm when the new crop begins, green rice grows and the field is lush with ripening rice.
