Sapa is in all respects a retreat from the city life – it’s cooler and very relaxing – the French established it as a hill station back in 1930’s – when European visitors travelled up by sedan chair from Lai Cai .

James – who was on the trek I did from Saigon to Hanoi had also decided to come along – and after exploring the renowned Saturday market – fascinating just to watch as the “live” animals were lined to be killed right in front of you and to be some families dinner that evening – we set off with our guide.

We were heading down valley from Sapa following the line of the Hoang Lien mountains – there is only one path out of Sapa down this particular valley.

Our first day involved trekking 10 kms passing a village of Hmong people – this tribe originally came from China and fled to northern Vietnam in the early 18th century – Hmong means “freedom people”!

At one end of this room an open door way leads to the kitchen/ wash area. There is an area for a fire and a long low bench that is used to store the cooking utensils upon – thats the kitchen!!!

At the very end of this part of the building there is a doorway that leads outside to the loo! It is pretty new west tern one. I heard that they just build it before we came to place a drop loo The external walls are made from bamboo and the roof is like corrugated iron.

All I can say is that I was glad to arrive back in Hanoi on Monday morning, even though it was 4.50am when we arrived – and after sitting by Hoan Kiem lake in the centre of city and watching the sun come up and the “Hanoians” out and about doing their Tai Chi – I was glad to get checked into my Hotel and have a shower!!!
