Preparations for Vietnamese New Year, start two or three months before the the actual celebrations. People try to pay off their debts in advance so that they can be debt-free on Tet. Parents buy new clothes for their children so that the children can wear them when Tet arrives. Because a lot of commercial activities will cease during the celebrations people try to stock up on supplies as much as possible.

One New Year’s Eve or Vietnamese New Year each home thoroughly cleaned and decorated with flowers and offerings for ancestors by the night before Tet.

In the morning, actual Tet celebrations begin. The first day of Tet is reserved for the nuclear family. In big cities, the streets are usually empty as most people stay at home or leave the city to visit their close relatives in the countryside.

One of the most traditional special foods for New Year of Vietnamese people is Banh Chung or sticky rice cake. Banh Chung is made of sticky rice, pork meat and green bean. All the ingredients are wrapped inside a special leaf which calls Dong.

The pork meat is usually soaked with pepper for several hours. Squaring off and tying the cakes with bamboo strings require skillful hands to make it a perfect square.

Banh Chung is a must among other foods to be placed on the ancestor’s altars during Tet holiday. In the old time, one or two days before Tet, every family prepares and cooks the Banh Chung around the warm fire.
